2010 Planning Begin At 50,000 Feet

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers 2010 Planning: Begin at 50,000 Feet This is the last in my series on how lawyers I coach are planning for 2010. As you will see below, Kevin O’Neill uses David Allen’s Getting Things Done approach. Through my work with Cordell, I am a big fan of the Getting Things Done (GTD) series of books by David Allen, and they are very helpful in the process of developing my business plan. The GTD principles compare your planning and implementation to an aviation system with different altitudes from “runway” duties (the literal next step tasks needed to move the project forward) to the 50,000 foot-level where you are focused on the mission and vision for your life. I’ve adapted the GTD principles to my own needs in developing long-term goals and objectives of which a business plan is just one element. So working down from 50,000 feet, begin by understanding who you want to be and what you want to become.  My vision and guiding principles have been in place for 15 years and will remain the focus for who I want to be professionally and personally. If you don’t have the vision and principles in place, planning for the year will be difficult to conceive and implement. The next level down (40,000 feet) define your roles in daily life. For me, those 2010 roles are Husband, Father, Friend, Self, Citizen, Attorney, Manager, Leader and the nature of each of those roles are evolving over time. That’s true at work where my roles as Attorney, Manager, and Leader in 2010 are fundamentally different than what they were in 2008. It’s true outside of work as well because what my wife, children, and friends need in 2010 is not what I gave them in 2008. You must spend some time thinking about what you would define as success for each of these roles in 2010. You also must consider how you are going to allocate the 8,760 hours you have in a year between these roles because we know the hours spent succeeding as “Attorney” often come out of the time we wish we had for “Father” or “Friend.” My final “business” plan for 2010 will have a page for items related to “personal issues” to go with a page on purely “business issues.” I don’t nec essarily share the personal goals/plan with the folks at work but having the personal documented along with the professional makes it easier to make sure work won’t swallow my real life over time. Also, that’s the part where discussion with your significant other is key â€" you can’t have support for a plan that’s not shared and accepted. At 30,000 feet are your multi-year goals â€" these are the mileposts to making your long-term vision a reality. For lawyers, we have lots of multi-year goals we are working towards: make partner, make equity partner, have a book of business worth $x, write a book on my topic of expertise, etc.  Your personal life is full of those goals as well: Get married, have children, send your parents on vacation to Europe, buy a home, retire with $x in the bank, etc. Do you have these goals on paper somewhere? They don’t have to be in your 2010 business plan but they should exist on paper somewhere even if you have to write them as part of this year’s business plan development process. Are there elements of your work/personal plans for 2010 that you can point to and say “this is helping me reach the multi-year goal of [fill in the blank]?” Lower down, at 20,000 feet, you have the various publics to whom you are responsible: clients, partners and colleagues at work, family, friends, your church, and yourself at home. There’s lots of turbulence at this level because the needs of these people are ever-changing and that alters your obligations to them. Do you know who is being served by each of the goals in your business plan? Professionally, what are your clients expecting you to do in 2010 that they would define as success and is that in your plan? In my 2010 business plan, every client I currently have could read the plan, point to a specific bullet and say “That’s what you are trying to do for me next year” yet only about 25% of the bullets in the business part of the plan are specifically focused on current client goals. At 10,000 feet, you have projects, defined broadly as anything requiring more than one step to accomplish. Most clients will have lots of projects over the course of a year (Ex: association conference where I will speak, legal memo that needs to be researched and written, etc.) but none of those projects are likely to be something you want in a business plan. The same is true with the “runway” or next-step tasks needed to move forward on various projects. Yes, you are going to have to implement your business plan via projects and tasks but that level of detail is for a project/task list not a business plan. Keep the plan focused on measuring success for the coming year and how that success will help you achieve longer-term personal and professional goals. In developing my plan, I try to follow a few rules: In the end, what I have is a series of documents: one page that expresses my vision/mission statements, my core values and the adjectives I would hope others would use to describe me in their daily interactions with me. This document is more than a decade old. I have a set of long-term goals (5 years or longer) on a page and for almost 20 years I’ve had what is now commonly called a “bucket list” of about 100 life experiences I am pursuing (Ex: work took me to China last year and allowed me to check off the goal of standing on the Great Wall). My “business plan for 2010” is two pages â€" one for work goals and one for personal goals â€" and is below those bigger picture items listed above. The business plan is just the 2010 steps towards a longer-term vision. A paycheck won’t motivate me as well as the knowledge that what I’m doing today is a building block for the future I want. I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

Meet One Of The Young Engineers Who's Pioneering 3D Technology StephanieDepalma realized she was going to seek after building for one extremely straightforward explanation she outrageously appreciates science. For me, it comes down to the way that science is cool, Depalma said. I love science. What's more, I wasnt truly ready to go another course of accomplishing something I didnt enjoy.Despite having this information truly at an opportune time, however, the way that brought her toGeneral Electric Additive, a hyper-creative division of GE devoted to 3D printing and comparative advancements, wasnt the most clear cut. Straight out of Ohio State, shed handled a designing position, yet one that managed materials and assembling. It was there that she initially dunked her toes in the field and experienced what working in a generally male-overwhelmed field is like.GE Is Hiring! Peruse Opportunities.I was actually the main female that worked in the designing division, so it was somewhat of a one of a kind position, Depalma, who was likewise the most yout hful part in her group by around 20 years, said. It was exceptionally fun in a manner as in, truly, there was a sex contrast, however it was additionally an extremely incredible chance to continue onward at any rate with the goal that it wasnt like, Oh, theres Stephanie the young lady, it was, Oh, theres Stephanie my coworker. But sincegetting a vocation at GE, first as an architect for GE Aviation and later in a structure job at Additive, Depalma said shes not, at this point the main lady in the room a long way from it.GEs been extraordinary. Its been one of the main jobs Ive had where there are in reality a great deal of ladies I work with, she said. That is in the designing capacity, as well, not simply in other help type jobs. So that has been truly invigorating, to have other ladies to associate with.Being ready to work with other ladies and men who are as enthusiastic about science as Depalma is has brought about some nearby bonds all through the workplace. She found that this social dynamic, which has included everything from team activities evenings to emergency clinic visits to see colleagues infants, has truly meant how well were cooperating inside the workplace, too.(Photo politeness of Stephanie Depalma)The nature of the work shes doing is similarly invigorating, as well. Depalma gets the chance to awaken each day with the information shes a piece of something that has just not been done previously. What's more, that is an entirely cool feeling.Additive is simply truly cool innovation all in all, and presumably the most energizing thing for me is simply being in a group that is the first of its sort in the entire world, she said. Its extremely about spearheading a totally better approach for seeing how assembling will be done later on and how groups should take a gander at issues, and being on the frontal area of that is truly exciting. As eager as she is presently, Depalma confesses to having encountered some slight anxiety before joining GE, yet it wasnt well before those feelings of trepidation were put to rest.Since it was my first endeavor into corporate America, having just worked for moderately independent ventures previously, I was a little frightened I was going to feel like a little fish in a major lake, she reviewed. Need more genuineness, greater powerlessness, and greater trustworthiness on the Internet? Here you are. It is with anguishing hesitance that we are reporting that we are dropping Spark 2013. We can't call it something besides baffling, and we three met this end of the week to talk everything through. We had criticism: Spark, this year, was excessively costly, excessively long, and centered in such a large number of headings. We crunched and re-did the math, envisioning various situations where we may have the option to bring down the enlistment expenses. We ventured through what we may have done any other way and could move on a terrific, picture of-the-occasion sort of scale. We planned on how, at that point, to contact individuals who may have been contemplating Spark, however were vacillating, and to other people who probably won't have known about us as of now. In any case, all things considered, we have under about fourteen days before expecting to get our last numbers and full installment to the retreat setting. What's more, that doesn't feel like the sort of time it takes to re-value, re-dance, re-impart, and locate another (at least dozen) of our correct individu als. We attempted. At the point when we picked the current year's topic (or it picked us), we thought, Definitely. Flash and Step Up. And we did. Be that as it may, where we think we came up short is in (what became) our hazy meaning of Venture up. We figured it may intend to pull out all the stops. And we did. We picked the best heads we could discover, coordinating them up ability for-ability, realizing that they were each main, kick-ass, world-changers. We additionally made the retreat longer than it was a year ago, and keeping in mind that this made the retreat 'greater', it didn't really mirror your wants and needs. To them, and to you, we apologize for not exactly hitting the imprint. As we delve further and step up into our jobs as makers of this one of a kind occasion, we see that what we made wasn't actually what we needed. By one way or another, we dismissed you, the ladies who we most need to serve. It began to not feel right: we need Spark to be a real impression of what our identity is and what we need to give others, and this piece, while starting in heart-focused goodness, turned out to be cockeyed as we strolled further down the Spark way. Along these lines, we believe that there was a distinction between us, our kin, and the retreat itself. We are canceling Spark in 2013. Be that as it may, not for eternity. After our conversations this end of the week, our contemplations are increasingly engaged. We three are intending to meet face to face this spring to truly get down to the core of Spark, including what we did a year ago that made it work, and what we did for this present year that didn't. We have to center, and harden what our identity is and what we are about. Shockingly, we didn't exactly have things directly on our end this year, and it is our guarantee to turn that around. We are genuinely appreciative for constantly, exertion, and love that our pioneers have placed into attempting to make this work. We revere every one of our fans and supporters, and are prepared to hear your caring criticism on where we wandered off. Realize that our hearts are crude and that this choice accompanied incredible hesitance. Nonetheless, it feels better to be straightforward all around with where we are, and we know the work that we have before us to make Spark fly later on. We trust that you'll be with us en route. With incredible love, appreciation, a smidgen of bitterness, and trust this is the proper activity, Tania, Deanna, and Lori. Prior to the declaration, I got met by Deanna, and I just hafta share it here. Its too great not to!

Ep 152 - The Bigger Strategy Behind Workplace Productivity - Workology

Ep 152 - The Bigger Strategy Behind Workplace Productivity - Workology Episode 152: The Bigger Strategy Behind Workplace Productivity with Maura Nevel Thomas (@mnthomas) The search for optimum productivity and maximum efficiency is a struggle as we juggle our personal lives and professional ones, not to mention friendships, families and our personal interests. There never seems like there is enough time to get things done. Our next podcast guest walks us through strategies for being your most productive and effective self, and tackling that to-do list. Episode 152: The Bigger Strategy Behind Workplace Productivity with Maura Nevel Thomas (@mnthomas) Maura Nevel Thomas is a productivity expert who trains individuals, organizations, and teams on how to be their most productive, organized, and happy selves. Mauras work has been featured all over the world in publications like the Harvard Business Review. In my ongoing quest to drive my own productivity, I didnt just want to focus on tools but the bigger picture and strategy behind being more productive at work, which is what Maura absolutely does. Maura talks us through what she calls attention management, which is very different from time management. Attention management is giving that person, that meeting, or that moment your full attention. You can manage your time well, but not be present in a conversation with a friend, say, over lunch because you are waiting on a call from a business colleague. Maura says that attention management is just as important as time management, if not more so. With all of our modern distractions, the ability to be present  in the moment during a project or meeting is of the utmost importance. If you can focus your attention, Maura says the ability to be present in your moments and to engage your flow can bring out your highest performing and best self. Bringing Intentionality to Your Work Day: Workflow Management Maura says that it isnt just focus that can drive success.  The decision to be organized and productive is an intentional one and it keeps us from getting swept away by all of the demands that are constantly assaulting us. Maura says that offering training and support in this area is how an organization can support the productivity of its staff. Doing so frees up their people to really bring the full weight of their genius to the organization, contributing to the organizations success. Intentionality is more than being focused. Its about promising yourself, your team, and your organization that you wont fall into the trap of reaction. As a leader, we can really help our teams grow and flourish by giving them the tools to be successful not just at work but in all aspects of their lives through productivity training and resources. One of these intentional philosophies and processes when it comes to productivity is something that Maura calls workflow management. The system serves as a guide and process for those of us (including myself) who arent fans of those things. It still needs to be a part of our lives in order to be able to function at our best. Ive been diving into Mauras book,  Work Without Walls, and am committed to bringing more structure to my life. Maura shares that creative people (which I am) especially need this so they can be their most creative selves. I love Maura’s insights and the idea that we have control over the environment and the distractions that we let into our lives. Interviewing Maura reminds me of this as, during this podcast interview, I had no less than two phone calls, three text messages and a handful of emails notifying me that they had arrived. It’s easy to fall into that trap where we have to be always available. I hope that together we can help become better at attention management and workflow processes together. It’s something I’m really focused on the rest of this year. Connect with Maura Nevel Thomas. Quitting Your JobShould I Stay or Should I Go - Pathfinder Careers

Stopping Your JobShould I Stay or Should I Go - Pathfinder Careers Stopping Your Job:Should I Stay or Should I Go? Echoes of the well known Clash melody have without a doubt resounded at that difficult snapshot of concluding whether to leave a place of employment or not. Go ahead. It's alright to every so often entertain yourself with that dream of going out in a blast of greatness like a specific JetBlue airline steward did a year ago. Be that as it may, at that point, we should get genuine. Sooner or later in our vocation, the majority of us wind up in such a thorny situation. The genuine stunt to exploring a befuddling chaos of clashing feelings is to tear verses directly from this tune and apply them to the genuine work world. Along these lines, darlin,' you gotta let me know: 1) In the event that you state that you are mine, I'll be there to the furthest limit of time. Most managers are about as faithful to you as you are to them. Ultimately, your being their worker is a common business choice, and unwaveringness can vacate the premises if organization accounts take a tumble. You have to do intermittent gut keeps an eye on the financial wellbeing of your manager. On the off chance that the vibes aren't acceptable, follow your instinct. 2) It's consistently bother, bother, bother. You need to choose whether guarantees of advancements, raises, and impetuses just as development will be conveyed on by employers. If you continually get consolations, however the organization doesn't convey the merchandise, it may be an ideal opportunity to put the prodding as far as possible and call it for what it is: being driven down the way of hedonism. Time to begin looking. 3) One day it's fine; the following day, it's dark. Ever work in a 'yo-yo' condition? One day you feel extraordinary about your work, just to crash in the wake of being hung out to dry by unsupportive bosses? A sound workplace implies you are energized each and every day about going to work, and feel compensated and perceived for your commitments. Without a doubt, we as a whole have terrible days, however when they approach or dwarf the great ones, at that point you are very brave choices to make… soon. 4) In the event that I go, will there be inconvenience? The hardest part about leaving a current manager, sans elective business, is perhaps confronting broadened times of no income. It's the hazard you take, which is the reason most vocation experts prompt that you don't withdraw one boss until you've arranged something else. Ultimately, it comes down to you choosing whether the difficulty of searching for an occupation merits the conceivable compensation of an incredible employment (and leave methodology of your momentum work). 5) In the event that I remain, will it be twofold? Weighing in the psychological expense and cost that having steady issues or stressors at work is something you can't disregard. Remaining in an occupation you loathe can add a long time to your life, also effect or start wellbeing problems. Do you know any individual who has landed ulcers from their position? I do. Bounty. 6) This hesitation is bothering me. Someone once disclosed to me that when we dread change the most (in this way delaying), is actually when we most need the change. If you have been going back and forth for quite a while now, it implies that there is something bothering you and clearly, the norm isn't comprehending it. 7) Who precisely am I expected to be? Are you arriving at your profession potential in your current position? Rose Tremain wrote the well known expression: Life is definitely not a dress practice on the off chance that you are not associated with your energy and acknowledging what you COULD be, possibly that implies that the time has come to proceed onward. You just get one possibility in this life! 8) Should I cool it or should I blow? I once had an instigator of a chief, who, now and again, was unreasonable to the point that it would nearly drive ME to the brink… it was so maddening a portion of the things that this individual did. In any case, cooling it may be a smart thought â€" as opposed to submitting the general direction to our recently referenced JetBlue airline steward friend. Short-term responses could affect your drawn out employability, so returning a stage to decide if official conflicts are one-time just events, or side effects of a bigger, more profound issue. On the off chance that the business doesn't need you, at that point perhaps setting yourself free could be the response to making the way for additional opportunities and a more beneficial workplace!

Red Flags in Job Interviews

Warnings in Job Interviews Warnings in Job Interviews Have you at any point left a prospective employee meet-up with annoying questions about the business? Check yourself fortunate for taking note. You without a doubt recognized some warnings. Suppose you were amped up for your new position open door when you showed up at organization base camp for a meeting. However, at that point the employing chief made you hold up in the hall an additional hour. He didn't keep in touch or ask about your expert objectives during your meeting. Furthermore, when you requested instances of how you may utilize your bookkeeping aptitudes and experience to add to the organization's exhibition and development, he offered a slippery response. Alone, one of those prospective employee meet-up slips up may be satisfactory. Be that as it may, together, they're a clarion get to graciously pull out of thought and continue searching for another position, regardless of whether you're edgy to escape your present place of employment or need to begin procuring a check soon. Here are seven prospective employee meeting warnings that up-and-comers shouldn't disregard: 1. Legitimate inquiries find dubious solutions Obviously, it's never proper for the questioner to uncover individual data about a past representative. Be that as it may, the recruiting chief ought to have the option to address any inquiries you present about the desires for the position and give some history about the job and its impact on organization tasks. Search for explicit replies answers to questions like the accompanying: What is the primary test the individual recruited for this activity should manage? What do you see as the fund or bookkeeping office's strategic? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the activity? What would you be able to educate me regarding the individual to whom I would report? 2. The questioner can't give an away from of the activity Regardless of whether you're applying to be a passage level staff bookkeeper or the CFO, your questioner ought to have the option to clarify the obligations of the job and how achievement will be estimated. On the off chance that he can't, you will probably make some troublesome memories fashioning a make profession way in the organization. 3. Portrayals of workplace are unbiased Ask the employing administrator what he loves most about working at the organization. In the event that he can't reply without faltering, it could flag work disappointment on his part. On the off chance that the open door emerges during your visit, suggest a similar conversation starter to different representatives in the division, from the bookkeeping supervisor to the information passage assistant. Do they appear enthused about their day by day obligations? Accomplishes the organization work to keep them upbeat and prize them for their endeavors? Are there open doors for progression? Focus on the workplace state of mind. 4. Representative residency is short An example of representative turnover can be an indication of a high-stress, low-resolve office culture. In the event that you discover that past representatives didn't remain long at the organization, and there's no proof of residency among the staff, you may have an awful supervisor circumstance or a poisonous workplace. 5. The employing administrator isn't readied Similarly as you've contributed time getting ready for the meeting, made a point to show up immediately, read desires for the accessible position and showed up with inquiries concerning the organization and its objectives, your forthcoming boss ought to likewise be prepared to survey whether you are an ideal fit for the position. Observe if it's evident that the business hasn't read your resume, or is late for the arrangement. 6. The workplace isn't speaking to you From the second you stroll in the entryway for your prospective employee meet-up, focus on the earth. Are laborers effectively occupied with their obligations, or would they say they are drooped over their work spaces like automatons? Does your forthcoming manager manage his companions and subordinates in an expert way, or does he appear to be standoffish and cavalier? In the event that you see these issues during your meeting, there's no motivation to accept they'll improve once you begin working in the workplace. 7. You don't feel like you're being heard On the off chance that the recruiting administrator does all the talking in the meeting and doesn't seem to tune in to your remarks or pose astute inquiries about your vocation objectives and past achievements, that is a warning. You can tell whether an administrator is truly intrigued and connected by watching his non-verbal communication, eye to eye connection and in general decorum during the meeting. Warnings for work competitors aren't difficult to spot in the event that you recognize what to search for during the meeting. Try not to dismiss them. Rather, direct your concentration toward discovering business somewhere else. As yet looking? Find out about how a staffing office like our own can assist you with finding an impermanent position. Do We Give a Sh!t About Swearing at Work - Spark Hire

Do We Give a Sh!t About Swearing at Work - Spark Hire Rules on terrible language can and ought to vary by calling and working environment. Most working environments keep up a don't do it strategy. For instance, I could never swear before my chief. In any case, in a cutting edge working environment, are the principles for proficient direct with regards to terrible language evolving? A few examinations show that swearing in the workplace isnt such an awful thing. Past that, consider how most of your customers and representatives feel about the periodic bleep-capable at work: OK care if your associates began swearing transparently? On the off chance that you couldn't care less… does any other individual? An article on Huffington Post the previous spring discussed an investigation demonstrating that terrible language in the working environment can really advance solidarity among representatives. While swearing probably won't be the most expert approach to vent outrage, it releases strain. The arrival of strain permits representatives to bargain all the more profitably with worry in the advanced work environment. The genuine admonition to this conversation is that awful language ought to never be utilized as a major aspect of badgering or harassing. While swearing among colleagues may not appear that large of an arrangement, shouldn't something be said about terrible language before outside colleagues? Customers? While swearing before these individuals may appear as though strolling through an expert mine field, individuals who have done investigations on terrible language and open talking state in any case. In the cutting edge working environment, being affable may best being proficient. A recent report requested that undergrads rank the influence and enthusiasm of speakers. Given addresses of comparative tone and substance, the speakers who swore once during their discourse scored better grades. One master says, Swearing is a method of conveying that you are the most notable individual in the room. For specific sorts of deals and arrangement circumstances, this could be a valuable strategy in a cutting edge working environment. Swearing can likewise cause you to show up increasingly relatable. I don't claim to think a lot about deals, however a feeling of fellowship can unquestionably go far toward great customer relations. Further, it is essential to address what number of individuals in an advanced working environment truly care about swearing. In an overview on CBC News, 75% of workers fell into the swearing periodically or noisily and every now and again classes. Less than 20% tried to smother their swearing (once in a while and softly) and a minor 5% said that swearing wasnt allowed at their work environment. In view of these figures, should organizations have a terrible language strategy? Should present day working environments transparently support terrible language? With quantifiable beneficial outcomes from swearing, and everyone doing it generally at any rate, apparently the periodicâ€"or not all that infrequentâ€"foulness can be a piece of an expert working environment. Job Offer why most candidates screw their career accepting the wrong job

Job Offer why most candidates screw their career accepting the wrong job Accepting  the wrong job offer It started when we accepted the wrong job offer Accepting  the wrong job offer In the past 3 weeks, I have met with three different job seekers and I noticed a common thread. With each situation, the candidates DID NOT  realize they were working against themselves in their job search. Frankly, I think that this phenomenon is happening with 90% of the candidates out there and I want to give folks something to marinate on.     The candidates The group consisted of a product manager, a project manager, and a business analyst. I consider all three candidates to be very smart. All three candidates had a Masters or MBA, all had at least 5 years of experience post MBA. No dummies here. These folks are very purposeful about their careers and don’t just “take a job because they don’t have options”. All three are successful in their current/prior jobs and wanted to pursue jobs in similar industries. The product and project manager wanted to stay in tech and the business analyst wanted to stay in corporate finance. All three candidates told me a little bit about themselves and all three had a list of strengths and weakness. In addition, they all came prepared with ideas of where they could be successful. 2 of the three had job postings they were interested in applying for and were wanted advice on how to get into these respective roles.  Like I said, “Purposeful”.   Is the role interesting or just a role? After asking  a few questions, I came to the same conclusion with all three candidates: None of the roles were interesting to any of the candidates. All of the candidates assumed that since their prior experience was X position and Y industry, their next gig should be X position and Y industry. The candidates that came from technology companies wanted to stay in technology and the analyst wanted to stay in banking. To a person, they all admitted that they were not super excited about receiving a job offer  for these positions. Successful and happy or just successful? I understand why they would come to this conclusion. They had success in their prior gigs. Why wouldn’t anyone continue down a similar path and increase their record of success? My hesitation was that although they may be successful, I didn’t think any of these smart candidates would be “happy” in their desired roles. They had boxed themselves into a traditional thinking mindset. I am a project manager in X industry, I should continue to be a project manager in X industry. Never mind that these industries were not that interesting to our candidates. “I got bills to pay and kids to put through college, I need to get a job offer dammit!”     Can you work in your dream industry? HRN: “What would be your dream job? What would you love to do? What would the job offer look like?” Analyst: I love to travel, I wish I could write reviews on travel destinations, but who is going to pay me for that? I have been in the finance industry all my life, I have an MBA.” HRN: “One of the largest cruise lines is based here in the city. Alaska Airlines is also based here. You may not be working as a travel writer, but you can be working in the industry and getting a great discount on your travel.   I could see the gears turning in the Analysts mind. “I never thought about either of those companies or that industry. Both of those companies have GOT to be collecting big data, I would love to analyze data based on travel.”   If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life. Its not all salt mines   As a guy working in HR, no matter what we do, there will be aspects of the job which we dont care for as much as others. To overcome this, we can work in an industry which we find genuinely  interesting.  I dont expect any job to be  all fun and games, but a job can be  less of the  salt mines.     Trust me, when we find a company or industry we are interested interviewing becomes much more interesting. The answers that we know we should be given during an interview for a Jay-Oh-Bee suddenly become answers we WANT to give because we are looking at a potential career. The interview isn’t a fake act where we are trying to show interest in a position. The interview becomes a dialogue and a conversation because both hiring manager and the candidate genuinely want to be working with each other. What do you LIKE? If you are looking for a job or considering a job change, my suggestion is to avoid trying to fit your skills to the job. With this mentality, the company might make a hire, but the employee loses because there isn’t a genuine interest. Figure out what you LIKE to do, and fit the job to you. This way the company benefits because you are genuinely interested in the work and you benefit because you are working on something you are already interested in. Perfect HR mug: A VP of Sales gave me this mug years ago and I use it every day. Fortunately, I find myself working with him again 10 years later. Thanks MM Make the company work for you Applying to a company or position that only fills the requirement of paying the bills. We could be applying to a company that not only pays the bills but is genuinely interesting. We are settling (for the position) before we even explored options (other industries) and are literally forcing a square peg (candidate) into a round hole (position).   Lets fit the square peg into the square hole. Requisite dating example If you are a single person and using online websites to find a potential +1, it helps to use a dating site that caters to your desired demographic. If you are a country girl and want to find a country boy, yes, go to Bumble and go to Match, but also check out www.Farmersonly.com.   If your parents are pestering you to find a nice Jewish boy, yes, check out Tinder, but also check out www.jdate.com.  Look for happiness in a target-rich environment. Even a part-time job can be in your industry Today, I talked with a person who is relatively young in their career. She wants to go to school and then pursue a Masters so she can become a counselor. She is currently working part-time in an industry unrelated to counseling while she goes to school.   Because her part-time job is literally “just paying the bills” and she has no long-term interest in the field. I believe she could  expand her job search and land a job offer in an industry of interest.   Although not be a counselor now, working in the counseling industry while going to school can help her long-term.  It  doesn’t really matter what niche of counseling she works in at this point. We want to add a track record of interest to our resume so when we do apply for our first career job,  we get a relevant job offer. More than one way to skin a cat My other suggestion is to explore  working with a company that will help pay for school. We have a LOT of large companies in this town and we can name a dozen that have tuition reimbursement programs including the colleges themselves.   The point is, don’t feel boxed in with your job search. If you have a passion, although we may not find an exact job, we can probably find something with our industry of interest. See you at the after party, HRNasty nasty: an unreal maneuver of incredible technique, something that is ridiculously good, tricky and manipulative but with a result that can’t help but be admired, a phrase used to describe someone who is good at something. “He has a nasty forkball. Enter Pathways!

Enter… Pathways! Sarah Hunt Exeter student, Pathways participant, writer of Sk8er Boi. Sarah Hunt is a Liberal Arts student based on the Streatham Campus.   Jumping straight into the job market can seem pretty scary, right? Before last year, I had this vague idea that marketing might be my career of choice, but I couldn’t say for sure. I had a few bits of work experience, but I wasn’t studying for a marketing degree, so most of the theory went straight over my head. Not only was I worried that I wouldn’t have a strong grad scheme application, but I was also concerned that, in a workplace, I’d be doing a whole lot more sinking than swimming. Basically, I needed some metaphorical armbands, and I needed them quick. Enter… Pathways! Summer is the opportunity to break free from university, to go out and live our best lives. That’s why a three-month summer internship can seem daunting; you go straight from exams into an even more testing environment. Pathways is different. You don’t have to give up your whole summer, and in return for spending two weeks in a structured scheme, you get peace of mind that you’ve gained a fabulous lilo of information and experience to keep you afloat during application season and in jobs. It means you can chill when you’re bobbing around the pool just two weeks later. Pathways is different in return for spending two weeks in a structured scheme, you get peace of mind that you’ve gained a fabulous lilo of information and experience to keep you afloat during application season. So, what is Pathways? Pathways is a careers scheme run by the University of Exeter. It’s designed to take in those who are interested in a career in a certain discipline, and boost their knowledge, training and inspiration. Week one is an intense learning week. You participate in talks from professionals, training sessions, QAs and a project that’s presented in front of industry professionals. It covers loads of ground in your discipline â€" for instance, in Pathways to Marketing, we covered sports marketing, PR, agencies, digital, data, business-to-business and heritage, to name just a few. All in one week. There was no hanging around, let me tell you that. Week two is totally different. You are sent off into the wide world to try out what you’ve learned at a business related to your area of interest within your discipline. Here, you do a one-week internship, getting to know the ropes, meet the people and prove to yourself that you’ve got what it takes for a career in this industry. It’s the perfect taster; short, intense and varied, because those supervising you are always keen to get you as involved as possible. For me, I went to HoneyBe Creative a small marketing company in Exeter, where I increased the number of employees by half! I learned loads in just one week, and was able to ask my questions and improve my performance while I was there. What did I get out of it? SO MUCH, is the short answer. The longer answer is that, because it comes from the Uni, Pathways is structured to give you the best start you could possibly get in your career of choice. Whereas other internships might expect me to basically already be a pro, I needed only passion to get onto the Pathways scheme, and came out of it with increased knowledge, confidence to apply to grad schemes, and a load more passion that resulted from the fab experiences I’d had. But y’all want concrete facts, don’t you? OK. Here’s what I’ve gained from it: I now know terminology that will get me through applications. I can discuss important marketing debates that affect companies, like GDPR. I know how to approach a marketing project and what makes it run smoothly. I can pinpoint the specialist area of marketing I want to go into. I know exactly how to improve my copywriting, thanks to my internship. I’ve boosted my confidence in a workplace environment. I’ve got two new things to put on my CV (the scheme, plus the internship). I have new friends who I can ask for advice as we head towards the same career goals. And that’s all from one intense, two-week course. Pathways is realistic, informative and gives you the breadth of information that even a whole summer stuck in one office couldn’t give you. I’d recommend Pathways, 100%. But who should do it? I used to love those personality finder games in kids’ magazines. The ones that were like ‘Which 2000s pop diva are you?’ Avril Lavigne, but that’s not my point. My point is that there isn’t one type of person who needs to do Pathways. There’s more than one route to get there (just like getting to Avril Lavigne). So, Pathways is for you if: You’re someone who has a vague idea of what career path you want to take. Why? Pathways will give you the knowledge that you need to make a more informed decision. You’re looking for an internship that’s going to be intense, supportive and really teach you things. Why? Pathways guarantees you an internship and guides the internship providers to making your week there beneficial to your career progression. So, basically, no more tea-making. You want to boost your CV to prep you for grad scheme applications. Why? Pathways gives you two solid items to put on your CV, and a huge number of experiences to draw on for those pesky ‘Talk about a time when…’ interview questions. Those are just three examples, but Pathways is open to anyone at Exeter (and Penryn), and I truly believe that it can benefit anyone and everyone towards making good career choices in the future. Basically, I think you should apply. And they didn’t even ask me to say that. There’s a wide variety of Pathway disciplines and talks from people who are specialists in those areas. If you’re not into marketing, there’s everything from politics to culture and heritage, and loads more. Pathways is realistic, informative and gives you the breadth of information that even a whole summer stuck in one office couldn’t give you. For me, the most important part was that it gave me confidence to know that this is the right career path for me. For others, it may be the experience that helps them turn around and go in a different direction. Ultimately, Pathways is out to help you achieve the best for your future. It definitely did for me. The details Applications open until 24 February 2019.   Shortlisted students will then be invited to an assessment centre where the final selection of candidates to go forward to the training internship stage will be decided.   Assessment Centres will take place towards the end of March before the end of term. Employer led training will be from 17-20 June 2019 Paid internship from 24-28 June 2019 Pathways are available in a number of flavours this year… Arts, Culture and Heritage, Charity and Development, Digital Innovation, International Trade, Marketing, Politics and Government, and Sport and Health.
